Round 10 of the 2025 Formula 1 season heads to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for the Canadian Grand Prix, where George Russell will start from pole position for the second year in a row. He edged out Max Verstappen in a tight qualifying session, while Oscar Piastri, the current championship leader, lines up third on the grid. Lights out is set for 2pm local time (Montreal).
George Russell delivered when it counted in Q3, producing a smooth and committed lap to secure pole at a venue where he’s clearly comfortable. It’s been a mixed campaign so far for Mercedes, but this performance puts Russell in prime position to fight for his first win of the season.
Max Verstappen will start alongside him in P2, but there’s extra pressure on the Red Bull star this weekend as he navigates a growing penalty point tally. Any further incidents could trigger a race ban — a risk Verstappen will be mindful of while chasing down Russell into Turn 1.
Oscar Piastri continues to lead the championship standings and once again finds himself in the mix at the front. Starting P3, the McLaren driver has the consistency and pace to capitalise if either of the front-row starters slip up early.
Further back, Lando Norris will start from P7 after a frustrating Q3 that saw him struggle for grip. His lower grid position puts him out of direct contention for the win and opens the door for both Piastri and Verstappen to gain valuable ground in the championship standings — especially if Norris remains stuck in traffic or loses time in the pit cycles.
The top sportsbooks have Red Bull’s Max Verstappen narrowly leading the Canadian Grand Prix markets, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Mercedes’ George Russell close behind in a tightening battle for pole and race honours.
